On February 20th, I had the incredible opportunity to attend a Brooklyn Talks event featuring the phenomenal @bisabutler and Barbara Bullard, moderated by Stephanie Sparling Williams. These powerhouse women spent the evening pouring into us, sharing their wisdom, personal journeys, and deeply relatable moments that made for an unforgettable experience.

Bisa’s talent is truly unmatched, and her work continues to leave me speechless. Knowing that she started as a painter and educator, (just like myself), is a powerful reminder of just how wonderful and limitless this creative journey can be beyond the classroom.

Bisa, thank you for your artistry, wisdom, and for being such a beacon of inspiration. This night was one for the books!

In Yoruba, "Ori" is the spark of human consciousness, an essential part of a person’s essence. It is made up of two parts: ori-òde, the physical head, and ori-inú, the inner or spiritual head. Ori is the essence of personality, guiding life and activities. It holds a person’s cosmic potential and purpose, serving as their most powerful spiritual force and divine connection to the creator. Knowing someone's Ori is one of the deepest understanding of self.

Completing this piece was an incredible journey. It marks my second time using oil paint and my largest oil painting yet at 24in x 30in. The process was nothing short of transformative, challenging, and empowering.

Words (and pictures) can’t do this piece justice, but you can experience it in person Friday, February 28 at "Euphoria in Hues" in Waterbury, CT.

Curated by the iconic Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys, "Giants" showcases the breathtaking artistry of Black and Brown living artists, giving them a powerful platform where their voices and visions can be truly seen and experienced.

Seeing works by Kehinde Wiley, Mickalene Thomas, Meleko Mokgosi, Amy Sherald, Nick Cave, and Titus Kaphar was inspiring. The pieces reflect their creators' immense talent and profound messages, pushing the boundaries of creativity and scale.

One philosophy of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys that deeply resonates with me is their stance on commissions. They believe that if they didn't lift a paintbrush or invested the hours in the piece, they shouldn't profit from the artwork. This respect for artists' work is commendable and essential in nurturing true creative freedom.

I stepped out of my acrylic paint comfort zone to explore the art of oil painting. This definitely won't be the last time you see #KNicholeDesigns experimenting with this medium.

Back story: This piece has been on my heart for about 6 months, inspired by a close friend who challenged me to explore an idea about "breast cancer awareness, featuring black women or black breast because they matter". I let that idea simmer in my creative soul until it was ready to be brought to life as "Survivorship" 💕. These women each have their own story and journey through breast cancer, whether they've experienced it firsthand and/or through a loved one.

Thank you all for your unwavering support in any capacity. I am just so blessed and fortunate that God has provided me with the gift and vehicle to continue to tell stories through visual art.

Now, it's finally ready for the world to enjoy and resonate with.
